What Gets You Through the Day?

I answered a query for article content regarding how to get through your day when you don’t feel like it. Below was my submission.

This content applies to Sales Engineering as well as all my other interests in this blog.

It is harder and harder to impress people-especially those concerned with, or responsible for, your advancement and promotion. A fantastic way to do this is to like, or even love, the unlovable. You can do this in two stages:

1. You don’t believe it, but you’re selling it, and
2. You believe it, and live it.

What I mean is that being professional, even enthusiastic, when people think you shouldn’t is a beacon of positive energy that is unavoidable. Every single job/chore I had-all my life-I loved. I know it sounds crazy, but I’ve had some of the worst jobs, so hear me out.

Several positive things happen when you like what you do (yes, even against your will!):

1. The day goes by fast, where if moping it will crawl.
2. You will gain similarly positive motivationally influenced people’s support (like minds attract), where negative complainers alienate themselves, and ultimately hate everything about their task/job/employer-especially other people that could help them. You’ll need those positive people when you aren’t at your A game.
3. You have far less “bad” stress and hypertension. Being miserable drains you, both physically and mentally, so that you will have no energy for the enjoyable things that work was taking you away from.
4. You will motivate and encourage good from those around you, making your experience better. Lets face it, it is easier to be inspired than to inspire!
5. You will gain praise (internal reward) easier. I would voluntarily clean the bilges of the diesel engines on the boat I was assigned to in the military, because I knew that everyone before me had done a “good enough” job. I made them immaculate and impressed everyone. If you do the same job, to the same extent, as everyone else, you will not gain their praise-which is a nice reward in itself. Big fish, small pond.
6. It feels good to do something right. Leaving a job 1/2 done, cheating, or blowing something off entirely ultimately increases the burden of others. In a team environment that will eventually eat away at you-no matter how cynically hardened your shell is.
7. If you do a poor job, the ultimate disrespect will play out in that you will not be asked to do the task any longer. At first you say “Great!”, but ultimately you realize that your unwillingness to do the job was seen as your inability to do the job-and that will never go away.
8. Positive people gravitate to other positive people, as is the case for the opposite. You want positive people, as they are the ones that will take you with them. If you learn nothing else, learn how powerful your professional network is.
9. If you get in the habit of being miserable, and dealing with it, you will be so used to this way of dealing with the necessity of work that you will soon grow to resent all work. After all, it is all you know, and the lazy fall back to routine.
10. Take the rap. It is very convenient to have someone or something to shift all the blame to, but it is destructive to yourself and others around you. If something bad happens to you, tell yourself “I should have seen that coming”. If you get menial jobs, tell yourself “I’m not trying hard enough to impress my superiors/supervisors”. If you get picked for an unlikeable job/task, tell yourself “They don’t think anyone else can handle it”. You can always put a positive spin on the negative-be creative.

So what should get you through the day? Maybe it is as simple as thinking of a loved one, etc. but isn’t that really treating the symptoms of a seemingly miserable job? Why not fix the problem by liking, nay loving, the job you do so the only thing you have to deal with is getting to your newly rewarding job!
